Eastside

The East Side of South Boston is bustling with activity. It is home to many of the larger older homes and with its close proximity to the beaches and Castle Island it is a very desirable area.

The City Point section in particular seems to have it all with parks, historical sites, and the beaches. There are many tree-lined streets with brick bow houses. As with all of South Boston the old and the new seem to blend together and make the area what it is, full of change and character.

The Thomas Park area is atop of Dorchester Heights, where George Washington once stood. The granite monument and walkway around the park make it a destination for neighbors and dogs alike. The city and harbor views are second to none from this vantage point. The ride up Telegraph Street to the heights and the streets around represent some of the best revitalizations of homes while still maintaining their character and charm.

As the final act of an eleven month siege, the Continental Army occupied these heights and forced the evacuation of British Troops from Boston on March 17, 1776 - General George Washington's first victory in the American Revolution.

Both Fort Independence and Castle Island are strong drawing points for neighbors and visitors that come to Southie. They provide a strong sense of history as well as being a great family destination. Walkers and joggers enjoy the many walkways.

The feel of the East side is upscale and realtors find that the area is a great draw for new people who want the closeness to downtown but Boston, but do not have to pay the price for inner city dwellings. The East side is abundant with buses that run to all parts of Boston and especially the connections to South Station, the financial district and mostly Logan Airport. The MBTA transit system or "T" as it is referred to is well designed for the citizens of Southie. East Broadway runs down the middle of this area with the major amount of South Boston's shops and restaurants line the Broadway and are a mix of old and new, with Irish pubs on many corners.
